Yap and Make Episode 2: Collage

Hello! Here's episode 2 of my "Yap and Make" series. If you don't remember from last time, I describe all the ups and downs of a creative project from start to finish. This video highlights the world of collage and junk journaling. I make a travel collage from my time in San Diego in July. I hope you enjoy!

For this blog entry, I’m going to share my edited script for the video~

• Intro

  • Inspirations

    • Not one to one comparisons, just who I’m liking at the moment!

      • Kathleen Illustrated (monthly wallpapers)

        • Bought next year’s Hobonichi because of them

• Acquire materials

  • When in doubt, take it home

    • I like to keep all my junk treasures in a plastic bag in my suitcase

  • Things to look for

    • Fun colors, textures

      • Move papers around, what’s the main core color you see from your stack? Then build a palette based on it

        • Personally, I like bold palettes, but a neutral base palette like white, brown, and black are great if you want other elements to be the stars, like photos or stickers

    • What products did you buy? What did you eat? Is there a fun logo from the restaurant you ate at?

      • What’s the story with the objects?

    • Business cards, especially artist business cards!

    • Receipts (logos on top of receipts).

      • Also great as a white neutral background

    • Stickers and washi tape

    • Pictures!

      • I have my regular printer, but if I want to use pictures from my phone, I use a Fujifilm Instax Mini to make small polaroids. There’s also thermal printers and sticker printers out there that look fun for collaging!

• Arrange, rearrange, rearrange…

  • Currently using multimedia sketchbooks for big collages. Try to find heavyweight paper. Heavier paper helps with using glue.

  • Lay pieces down before gluing

    • If you like arrangement, take a picture of it so you can refer to it when gluing

      • Currently using UHU glue sticks, permanent glue tape runners, and school glue

  • Determine what’s the star of the page, and what are the background elements

    • bigger/less detailed pieces are great for backgrounds

    • page layout, color, and the subject matter of the image help determine the star of the page. An easy star for a page is a photograph

• Bonus: add writing/drawings

  • I want to experiment with it in daily journal pages with my Hobonichi

  • Pens, markers, colored pencils, the world’s your oyster! Acrylic markers are great for drawing on top of many different textures

• Conclusion

  • Junk collages are fun, and it recycles materials you may have thrown away

  • It provides a more textural, tangible memory of a vacation than just pictures
